The pilot, at a glance.

A practical starting brief. Confirm the buyer and the scope before committing to a build.

Your first buyer

A plumber, electrician or other sole trader who misses enquiries while on a job.

What you deliver

One agreed phone-number setup, a missed-call trigger, one service SMS, a booking link and a delivery log.

Planning allowance: £150 for starting tools · 3 hours/week. Editorial assumptions; actual costs vary.

Check the fit, demand and trade-offs
Technical difficulty
Low: number, SMS and a simple automation
Demand to verify
Validate with the owner’s missed-call log; do not assume every missed call is a lost job.
Competition and sales
Easy to copy. Local relationships and reliable setup matter more than the technology. A short local pilot can be simpler to agree than a full AI project; timing depends on access and trust.
When to walk away
Skip this if the business rarely misses calls, cannot change its phone setup, or already has reliable follow-up.

What a working pilot must prove

A missed-call event produces one message; answered calls produce none; duplicate events do not send twice.

Your first four moves

  1. Validate

interview one owner and review anonymised missed-call counts with permission.

  2. Build

use a test number, one SMS template and a booking link. Avoid marketing follow-ups by default.

  3. Test

cover answered calls, withheld numbers, duplicate events, failures and opt-out requests.

  4. Pilot

agree a small scope, check delivery logs and measure replies before expanding.

Find the first conversation

Ask a trade business you already know to review a week of missed calls. Offer a narrowly scoped paid pilot only after confirming a real gap.

A sample conversation opener

When you are on a job, what happens to calls you cannot answer? I can show you a sample missed-call reply and help you test whether it is useful. Would a short walkthrough be helpful?

Adapt this for a relevant, lawful conversation. This is sample copy, not a message sent on your behalf.

Check your cost assumptions.

Illustrative inputs, not market prices or a revenue forecast. For recurring work, model one client-month. For one-off work, model one month of projects or download sales with the matching costs. Replace the examples with your own quotes. Before tax, acquisition costs and other overheads.

Contribution = monthly fee − platform costs − support hours × hourly value. Cash-cost recovery assumes this contribution continues and excludes initial build labour, setup fees received, taxes and customer acquisition.

What it is

Missed-call text-back is a simple automation: when a tradesperson cannot pick up, the system sends an instant SMS back to the caller saying who they reached, what happens next and how to book. In practice it is a virtual number or a call-forwarding layer sitting in front of the mobile, wired to an SMS API and a booking link. The customer feels acknowledged within seconds, the tradesperson keeps the job in play, and you can bundle in a booking page, review requests or a follow-up sequence. Most versions are built from off-the-shelf parts: a number, an SMS provider, and either a no-code automation platform or a small amount of code.

Why now

Tradespeople are drowning in inbound while working with both hands full, and customers now expect an immediate answer because they usually have a shortlist of numbers and dial them in order. At the same time the cost of building this has collapsed: virtual numbers, SMS APIs and no-code automation platforms are self-serve and priced per message, so a non-developer can assemble a working service in a weekend. AI voice agents and SMS booking bots are moving from novelty to normal in the trades, which means 'we text you straight back' is shifting from clever hack to baseline expectation. Most one-van operators still run everything off a personal mobile, so the gap between expectation and reality is wide open right now.

Where the money is

A potential first buyer: A plumber, electrician or other sole trader who misses enquiries while on a job. The proposed offer is: One agreed phone-number setup, a missed-call trigger, one service SMS, a booking link and a delivery log. A short local pilot can be simpler to agree than a full AI project; timing depends on access and trust. A buyer’s willingness to pay has not been independently established; validate the problem and quote the scope before building.

Who this is for

  • Sole traders and one-van trades: plumbers, electricians, gas engineers, locksmiths
  • Small trade firms with two to ten vans and no receptionist
  • Marketing agencies and web designers already serving trades
  • Virtual assistant and call-answering services for trades
  • Franchise networks and trade associations wanting a member perk
  • No-code builders looking for a productised service they can resell

Ways to monetise

  • A fixed-scope pilot for the deliverable described above; quote after discovery.
  • A separate support or update agreement only where the buyer needs ongoing work.
  • Training and handover of the agreed workflow; no guaranteed commercial result.

Estimated setup cost: Estimate: £150–£600 to launch, plus roughly £30–£150 a month in number, messaging and automation costs

Typical workflow

  1. Validate: interview one owner and review anonymised missed-call counts with permission.
  2. Build: use a test number, one SMS template and a booking link. Avoid marketing follow-ups by default.
  3. Test: cover answered calls, withheld numbers, duplicate events, failures and opt-out requests.
  4. Pilot: agree a small scope, check delivery logs and measure replies before expanding.

How to start

  1. Ask a trade business you already know to review a week of missed calls. Offer a narrowly scoped paid pilot only after confirming a real gap.
  2. Write the deliverables, exclusions, permissions and actual provider charges into a pilot scope.
  3. Agree this acceptance check: A missed-call event produces one message; answered calls produce none; duplicate events do not send twice.
  4. Use this stop condition before expanding: Skip this if the business rarely misses calls, cannot change its phone setup, or already has reliable follow-up.

Sources and what they support

Provider documentation and announcements can support capability claims. They do not establish buyer demand, your margin or the results of an independent pilot.

  • ICO: direct marketing and PECR – Explains the PECR rules for electronic marketing by phone, text and email, including consent and opt-out requirements
  • ICO: data protection fee – Sets out which organisations processing personal data must pay a data protection fee to the ICO
  • Twilio – Vendor homepage for self-serve messaging and voice APIs, showing what can be bought off the shelf
  • GOV.UK: set up a business – Official starting point for registering and structuring a new UK business

How this route was assessed

Legacy Gold Score v1: 78/100. Numerical components were not retained; the total cannot be independently recalculated. Trend unverified.

Original v1 rationale: Demand is steady and easy to verify, the build is fast with off-the-shelf tools and competition in this specific UK trade niche is still thin, but the value sits in local sales and setup rather than unique technology, which caps the ceiling.

Pilot plan reviewed 29 September 2026.

Risks and limitations

  • PECR and UK GDPR: an instant reply to a call is a service message, but anything promotional needs a lawful basis and clear consent. Keep marketing out of the first text and always offer an opt-out
  • You will be handling personal data, so expect to need a privacy notice, a written processor agreement with clients, and likely an ICO data protection fee
  • Deliverability and number reputation: SMS routes and sender IDs vary, and a badly configured setup can get filtered or blocked
  • Low switching costs and bundling: field-service and call-answering platforms already include this, so your edge is setup, support and local trust rather than the tech
  • Churn if results are not measured: without a simple 'jobs recovered' report, the subscription just looks like another direct debit
